Native American Heritage Month @ Taft: For Teachers

Featuring 20 resources that middle and high school teachers can turn to when developing lesson plans related to the roles of Native American peoples in American history and contemporary life. These resources include online exhibitions at the Smithsonian; the Smithsonian’s Native Knowledge 360° Educational Initiative; the work of the Mitchell and Hood Museums; and the growing work of Facing History in these thematic areas.

Welcome to the educator guide for “Living Nations, Living Words," the signature project of 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo—the first Native American poet to serve in this position. Harjo’s “Living Nations, Living Words” project gathers and highlights the diverse voices of 47 contemporary Native American poets.

Teaching Native American Histories is a Summer Institute for Teachers held at UMass Amherst and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Includes lesson plans for students from kindergarten through college.
