The Research Paper: Biography Project: Home

WELCOME TO YOUR BIOGRAPHY RESEARCH GUIDE!

This page is filled with reliable resources you can access on the Taft campus and from home to help you find information about the person you are researching.
RELIABLE = something or someone that may be relied on or trusted; dependable in achievement, accuracy, honesty, etc.: reliable information

ALWAYS start your research using Reference Sources such as Encyclopedias.

These sources provide the essential facts you need to know about your subject.
Facts like WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW

  • This will allow you to better understand where the specific information you find later fits in the bigger picture.
  • Make note of terms, also called keywords, relevant to your topic:
    • Examples: names of people; important dates; relevant legislation; words or expressions unique to your topic.
  • You can use these keywords when searching for books and other resources.

Examples of Reference Sources: Encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases.

Citing Your Sources

A statement from MIT Libraries on why we cite our sources

  • To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information.
  • To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas.
  • To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by other authors.
  • To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography or reference list.
Your Citations
  • Most of our Online Databases provide MLA citations you can copy and paste into your paper if your teacher says you may do so..
  • You can also use BibmeBibguruEasyBib (or any other electronic citation generator) to create your MLA citations.
  • Create a Works Cited page for your project using your Taft Google Docs, and add sources by copying and pasting new citations.
MLA Citations by Format from the MLA Style Center.
